Runaways

by Kimberlee Smith

Ghastly air of night jasmine and eucalyptus
suffocated us. The sun was tired and sulking,
kicking and fussing. It had to be dragged along to bed

The smells of decaying seaweed, salty and puckering
while my lover’s breath swirled in my mouth
with lingering cigarette smoke

I plunged nose to chin in a sweating glass of grapes
grown from somewhere camels roam free
and every spider and snake is deadly

The Great Ocean Road calls us under.
We want to go down, on each other.
I was untethered. You took me there

  1. I really like the rhythm here. The poem has a well-crafted meter that does not feel forced. I very much enjoyed this.
