The Human Nature of Wanting

by Paige Mentuck

We want what we can't have,
Isn't that interesting?
It's the middle of winter and all you want is summer
Yet in the sweltering heat you dream of a snowy night

The world is constantly changing and all you want is order,
But then you hate getting stuck in a routine
This concept of a never-ending unhappiness is unsettling

Wanting to be perfect, setting near impossible goals
But when you reach them you find yourself unhappy and making more
Why can't you just be happy with what you have

The days are too bright,
Yet you turn the lights on during the night
You want a miracle, even in such a time of hate and war
And I told her goodbye, but now all I crave is her hand to hold
