March Journal: Sunday, March 31, 2013

by Don Mager

All five sides of the dry chill-weary
backyard bare their chests to the bright and
useless morning sun.  Birds are hard at
work—all five sides—plucking seeds—sprucing
nests—preening in the loose dirt.  Ready
or not, they say, here we are, back in
 place.  Ordinariness stands firmly
in its place—all five sides.  But then.  Watch
now.  Right along with the Chickadees,
Thrushes and Robins, a stranger—white
dollops on sleek black wings, orange-tawny
chest and glassy black head—settles in,
right at home.  From where?  How?  A Grosbeak—
here—this here.  A Grosbeak—now—this now!

December Journal: Friday, December 6, 2013

by Don Mager

With a Wren’s persistence at a patch
of dry grass, the sun pecks doggedly
at the undersides of ice frozen
on chandalier limbs. In clandestine
caves of starless dark, sleet of evening’s
drive-time rain froze solid.  Half a day
away, ice clings undaunted by the
glaring sun’s affronts and its brazen
onslaughts.  Persistence hails its triumph.
Outbreaks of glee loosen ice chunks to
slip off.  Their silver clatters down to
bare grass’s midday patch, glistering
like the blast from a shattered windshield.
Ice shards drop.  Sun licks.   Ice drops.  Sun licks.

September Journal: Saturday, September 14, 2013

by Don Mager

Heat sticks to the skin and calls out to
mosquitoes to plant miniature
dollops of inflammation.  Its breath
is humid like oven steam.  Its weight
sinks down to deep lung sacks and stifles
oxygen.  Between five fingered broad-
leaf shade, gaps aim direct hits of sun
at expectant figs.  It plumps them up
like juicy dumplings.  It unstitches
small seams in their purpling pink skin
to ooze out syrupy slow dollops.
Best served chilled and sliced with morning toast
and coffee, they stew sweetness.  Their stems
drip milk that sticks on fingers.   Pluck them.
