Something Unexpected

sitting in my car
on another chilly morning
just waiting in the parking lot
before going into work
I watched a couple of black birds
one bird chasing after the other
and the black bird being chased
carried a piece of bread
holding it with its beak
at least
that’s what it looked like to me
then the black bird with the bread
suddenly
let it drop and
I watched it
falling through the air
but before the bread hit the ground
the other bird snatched it up
both of them turning
before flying away
and I sat there
a little while longer
thinking hey
that was kind of cool
